Quick question: if you had to move out tomorrow — not someday, tomorrow — do you actually know how much money you’d need? Most teens don’t. That’s exactly why we’re talking about this today.

Start With Rent — The Big One

In the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), there are two types of rent:

The Real First Punch: The Deposit

Before you get the keys, your landlord wants a deposit — Kaution. In the DACH region: three months of cold rent. Upfront. Before you own a single pot to cook in.

If your cold rent is €700, that’s €2,100 before you’ve moved a single box. This is usually the moment people realize moving out requires actual planning.

The 30% Rule

Your rent should never exceed 30% of your monthly net income. Earning €1,600/month? Your rent shouldn’t exceed ~€480. Go above that and everything else gets squeezed — groceries, transport, going out, saving. Everything.

Vienna: 50m² warm rent ~€950–1,000 + internet = ~€1,000/month. You need to earn at least €3,300 net/month to afford that comfortably. Deposit: ~€2,400 upfront.

Berlin: Slightly cheaper at ~€940–990/month. But with a 1.5% vacancy rate and rents rising 10–15%/year, good apartments disappear within days.

The Stuff Nobody Tells You

Realistic total: €1,700–2,000/month minimum in Vienna or Berlin. That’s your real number.

The Emergency Fund

The washing machine breaks. You get sick. Your laptop dies. These things happen — and they cost money you need to have ready. Rule: before moving out, have at least 3 months of living expenses saved as a buffer. Yes, on top of the deposit. Yes, on top of furniture. Without it, one broken appliance becomes debt.

Calculate your total monthly fixed costs before signing anything.

"Rent + utilities + groceries + insurance = your real monthly number. Do you earn enough? Do you have 3 months saved as a buffer? Do you have the deposit ready? Yes to all three? You’re ready."
